A Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court in Abuja has ordered the remand of former Minister of Labour and Productivity, Senator Chris Ngige, at the Kuje Correctional Centre following his arraignment on corruption-related charges filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Ngige appeared before Justice Mariam Hassan, where he was charged with eight counts bordering on misuse of office, contract fraud, and receiving gratification. He pleaded not guilty to all the charges.
EFCC Explains the ₦2.14 Billion Contract Fraud Allegations:
According to the EFCC, the alleged offences were committed during Ngige’s tenure as supervising minister of the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) between 2015 and 2023.
The commission alleged that Ngige:
- Influenced the award of NSITF contracts without due process.
- Approved contracts for companies allegedly linked to his associates.
- Oversaw contracts valued at about ₦2.14 billion.
- Received financial benefits through organisations connected to him.
The EFCC maintained that these actions violated public procurement laws and amounted to abuse of office.
Why the Court Refused Immediate Bail:
During the hearing, Ngige’s legal team applied for bail, citing his health condition and cooperation with investigators. However, the prosecution opposed the request, arguing that the bail application needed to be properly heard.
After considering both sides, Justice Hassan ruled that Ngige should be remanded in Kuje prison pending the determination of his bail application. The court also ordered that he be allowed access to medical care while in custody.
Meeting With Peter Obi Sparks Political Speculation:
Following Ngige’s remand, attention shifted to his recent meeting with former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, which took place days before his arrest.
This development triggered widespread speculation on social media, with claims suggesting that Ngige’s arrest may be politically motivated. Some users alleged that the arrest occurred shortly after the meeting, raising questions about political influence.
However, no official or credible evidence has linked Ngige’s arrest or prosecution to his meeting with Peter Obi. Authorities have not issued any statement connecting the EFCC case to political activities.
